Sometimes we feel down and we just don't know the reason why. Or we do know why but we don't know how to fix it. Sometimes we are no longer getting along with the person we love. And sometimes we could just use some extra support.

I am a counselor passionate about helping you and your loved ones overcome challenges, hang-ups, and mental and emotional issues that are preventing you from living freely.

Dealing with Difficult Emotions 101
Counseling Group
Next group: Begins August 10, 2018! (now enrolling clients)

Dealing with Difficult Emotions 101 - DBT-based Group Therapy

This is a dialectical behavior therapy-based group that will focus on recognizing, dealing with, accepting, and changing our emotions specifically through the use of the first two DBT skills: mindfulness and distress tolerance.  If you are experiencing intense emotions and it is impacting you negatively (i.e., it is hurting your relationships; you feel out of control or overwhelmed too often; you deal with obsessive, compulsive, or self-destructive behavior; you have difficulty organizing your life; you struggle with transitions, etc.), then this group is for you.  Come to this group with whatever emotions you are feeling and learn how to better cope with them so that you can better show love and understanding to both yourself and to others.  Whether you know the reasons for your difficult emotions or not, come learn how to increase your self-awareness and your understanding of what is going on in the inside, and how to cope with it.  This group will be part psychoeducational and part discussion/processing.

Ideal participants include those who are experiencing intense and difficult emotions, such as anger, sadness, grief, anxiety, depression, etc.   I offer both an evening and a daytime group.  New groups are starting all the time; interested participants should contact me for an initial phone screening to ensure that this group is appropriate for them, and then I will provide them enrollment information for the next available group.

Dealing with Difficult Emotions Support Group
Begins October 17, 2018!
Now enrolling clients who have completed DWDE 101 & 102

Dealing with Difficult Emotions Support Group

After having learned the DBT foundational skills of mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness, and after having found support and comradery in the DWDE 101 and 102 groups, clients have wanted to have a way to continue to meet with one another in a supportive environment, talk about the issues they continue to face in their lives, and share their successes and challenges in implementing the DBT concepts (and get ideas from one another in order to continue their growth and further their coping skills!).  Thus, this group is open to anyone who has completed both DWDE 101 and 102.  There is no commitment to attend a minimum or maximum number of sessions.  Instead, the support group is open to 10 participants per week, and participants will register on a sign-up sheet each week on a first-come, first-served basis.

A counselor will be present at each session, but will not come with pre-determined subject matter to discuss.  Instead, participants are welcome to take leadership in the group and bring up whatever topics/issues they would like to discuss.  The counselor is available to provide help and input on any DBT or mental health questions, and will also provide psychoeducation on topics the group specifically expresses an interest in learning more about or practicing within the group time.  This group is designed to provide for the group members’ needs, and the counselor will aid the group in the ways the group would like.

Ages:  Adult (18+) (Note: Please contact me if you are interested in a support group for adolescents.)
Dates & time:  Meets Wednesdays 6:00-7:15 PM, starting on October 17, 2018 - Continuous, rolling admission/registration
Cost: $45/session
Location: DC VA Counseling Psychotherapy, 200 Little Falls Street, Suite 306, Falls Church, VA 22046
Format: Participants are welcome to attend as many or as few support group sessions as they would like. Sign-up for each session is available until 24 hours prior to the session, at which point the sign-up sheet will be closed and those registered may attend.  Up to 10 participants may register for each session.
